New Bassoon!
So l went to the IDRS 2011 convention with the intention of buying a new bassoon. I’ve never owned one before, and to finally have the opportunity to go out and buy my own was exhilarating to say the least! I tried 34 different bassoons while I was there (yes, I counted), and there were so many different kinds. Let me just say that if I had a bit more money to spend, I would’ve made of with a very particular Fox 660 or Püchner (with the Antique finish), but since I was bound to a more conservative price range, I found this baby at Charles Double Reed Company.
The main thing I was looking for was an evenness in tone and intonation across the entire range of the instrument along with a particular “live”-ness to the sound. It was the end of the day, I had tried 33 bassoons, and was debating on a new Moosmann at Miller Marketing and a Püchner at Woodwind Brasswind in the $16,000 range but feeling thoroughly unconvinced by either of them. I was going to sleep on it and come back in the morning and see if I could make a decision. As I was getting ready to leave, I look towards the back of the ballroom and see another bassoon that I hadn’t tried. I decided to give it a whir (it was $14,000 after all…). The instant the reed began vibrating and I heard the sound emanating from the instrument, I knew. It wasn’t but thirty minutes later I asked them to keep the instrument on hold because I was more than interested.
